How to travel from Split to Klis fortress?

Klis fortress is located in the village of Klis, about 17 km in the hinterland, North of Split. There are two ways to arrive in Klis: by car and / or by local bus.

Fortress of Klis, one of the top attractions in Split area.

Traveling from Split to Klis by car

The easiest way to arrive from Split to the fortress of Klis is by the old road from the city of Solin into the hinterland. From Split, you need to take the exit from the town, following the indications for the highway A1. When you exit Split, follow the road towards Solin - instead of taking the exit to the highway, proceed straight to Solin and then turn right on the traffic lights in direction of Klis - Sinj. It is the old state road 6253, approx. 5 km of road up the hill to the fortress of Klis. The entire journey from the center of Split to the parking beneath the fortress of Klis is about 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

Traveling from Split to Klis by taxi or in private transfer?

Taxi from Split to Klis is not recommended; the price of the taxi ride can not be estimated and they usually charge more than it is usually due for this journey. If you have no other possibilities and if you need to take the taxi, be sure to arrange the price of the ride before taking the drive (it should not cost you over 35 EURO), or, if you can choose which taxi service to take, I would recommend Uber or Green taxi services. Private transfer is the best; the most reliable and the fastest way to get from Split to the fortress of Klis. In collaboration with local transfer agencies, I can arrange you the private transfer from any pick up point in Split, directly to the Klis fortress. The price of the transfer is 30 EURO in one direction (car transfer for up to 4 persons); 45 EURO (mini van transfer for 5 up to 8 persons). You can book your transfer sending me your e-mail enquiry at: transfers@insplit.net. If you are planing a trip from Split to Klis, take a look at our private tour transfer from Split to Klis (tour time approx. 2 hours, price 60 EUR for up to 4 persons, 90 EUR for 5 up to 8 persons, with professional driver).

Traveling from Split to Klis by local bus

From Split to the village of Klis there are 4 lines: lines 22, 34, 35 and 36.

Local line bus 22

Klis megdan - HNK (Split) - Klis megdan

The bus stop in Split is located in the city center; the name of the bus stop is HNK (Hrvatsko Narodno Kazalište - Croatian National theatre) and is located close to the theatre, address of the stop: Kazalisna poljana BB. This line takes you directly to the fortress, the last bus stop called Klis megdan (Klis fortress). The departures are not frequent, there are no departures on Sunday morning, there are frequent stops on the way from Split to Klis and the local buses are not comfortable at all. Nevretheless, this is the most convenient way to travel from the city center of Split directly to the fortress of Klis.

Local bus lines 34, 35 and 36

The main problem traveling by local buses 34, 35 and/or 36 is the location of the departure station in Split (Sukoišan bus terminal, which is located in Licka ulica, approx. 1 km from the city center) & the time of the journey (as there are frequent stops on the way from Split to Klis). From the city center to the terminal there are approx. 20 minutes walking, otherwise you need to take the local bus or a taxi. Another problem with these lines is the bus stop at the road near Klis: the buses do not take you to the fortress and there are no clear indications of the stop so you need to ask the driver where to get off for the fortress of Klis. Once you get off the bus, there are approx. 12-15 minutes walking up the hill, to the entrance of the fortress. On your return, if you choose to travel back to Split with these bus lines, you will need to come down the hill to the road (to the same bus stop you get off on your arrival) and you need to wave when you see the bus, otherwise, probably, it won't stop.

Ticket cost (valid for all local bus lines)

Klis is located in zone 2 of the local public transport. The ticket cost is 13 HRK for adults (approx. 1,7 EUR / person); 5 HRK for children (6-10 years old). The return ticket cost is 22 HRK (approx. 2,9 EUR). A single (one-way) ticket can be purchased at the bus, from the driver, payments are strictly in kuna and the price is the same as for buying it at the sale point. If you need tickets for more than one ride, you need to buy them at one of the sale points (payments in kuna but in majority of sale points debit and credit cards are also accepted). Please note that when you buy tickets at the sale point, you need to show your ticket to the driver for the validation when you get the bus.

Bus tickets sale points

The bus tickets for one ride, 2 rides or a block of 5 & 10 rides can be purchased at the official sale points: Bus ticket office: Address: Ulica Ivana Gundulića 33 (at the bus terminal Sukoišan) & at the kiosk of Tisak and/or Slobodna Dalmacija (kiosks sell newspapapers, tobacco, beverages, snacks, chewings, ... you can find them easily as there are many of them all around the city, as well as in the old town.
