island of brač tour from split
After meeting, we will take ferry from Split harbour to the port of Supetar - on the island of Brač. Ferry ride takes approx. 50 minutes.
Upon arrival to the port of Supetar, we will take the road to Pučišća - small settlement worldwide known for the limestone production that led to the most famous architecture locations such as Diocletian's Palace in Split, the Reichstag in Berlin and the lobby of the United Nations building in New York. Though there are no confirmed evidences, most probably also the White House in Washington has been built using the white stone from the island of Brač! On our stop in Pučišća, we will visit the Stone Masonry School, one of the most prestigious education facilities for master stonemasons and sculptors in Europe.
Our next destination is the village of Škrip, about 30 minutes drive from Pučišća. Škrip is the oldest settlement on the island of Brač and one of the oldest villages in Europe, being inhabited by the Illyrian tribes already 1.400 years B.C. The remains of the prehistoric Illyrian town walls are still visible around the village of Škrip. Inside the former Roman mausoleum and later the Tower of Radojković family, we will visit Museum of Brač to see the ancient Greek statue of Hercules, Roman tombstones and some other significant archaeological discoveries. Then, we will drive towards the town of Bol to fully enjoy our trip on one of the most beautiful beaches in the World, the famous Zlatni rat beach.
The Golden Horn beach (or Zlatni Rat in Croatian) is a pebbly 500 meters long tongue that frequently changes its shape according to sea currents, winds and waves - a truly paradise for windsurfers and paragliders from all over the world! During approx. 3 hours of your free time, you can choose either to relax in the pinewood having a cold drink, to have a swim in the crystal clear sea of the Golden Horn, to take a Jet Ski ride, windsurf or paraglide or have a tasty traditional lunch, if not in the mood for sea and water activities. After relaxing time on the beach, we will head to the centre of the town to visit the old town of Bol. On this short walking tour you will see the typical architecture of the island villages with narrow streets, white stone palaces and small colourful squares. At the end of the tour, we will walk through small fishermen’s harbour to reach Dominican monastery and the church of Our Lady of Mercy, located in a secluded picturesque bay, not far away from the centre of Bol.
Next, we will drive up the hill to the peak of Vid’s Mountain (Vidova Gora), the highest peak of all Adriatic islands. From 778 meters above the sea level, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the stunning view, one of the most spectacular panoramas in the entire Adriatic: a view over the Golden Horn beach and most of the islands of Dalmatian archipelago up to the peaks of the Italian Apennines, when visibility is particularly clear. Near the viewpoint, there are remains of the small church of St. Vid from 13th or 14th century, after which the mountain got its name. Finally, we will drive back to Supetar to visit the town and enjoy our last minutes on the island of Brač.
Supetar (St. Peter) is the capital of the island, located in a bay on the Northern side of Brač, around which some of the first settlements on the island were built. Walking along the promenade and through the narrow streets of the old town, we will see the Parish church of St. Peter, built on the remains of the early Christian basilica of St. Peter from the 6th century. At the end of the tour, we will visit the Gallery of Ivan Rendić, one of the most important artist of the island and the father of modern Croatian sculpture.
Our Brač tour ends here; nevertheless, if you are in the mood to spend some more time on the island, you might decide to stay a little bit longer as you will have plenty of time to enjoy your dinner until the last ferry departs from Supetar to Split.
The antique Hermitage of Blaca (optional)
One option of the island of Brač tour could include the walking trip to the “desert of Blaca” - to visit the famous Blaca Monastery. The antique Hermitage of Blaca is truly unique place: located in the middle of the island’s desert, far away from all, Blaca has been founded by the Glagolitic priests in 1551 during the Turkish invasion of the region.
Built on the rock under the steep hill cliff, the monastery of Blaca provides an amazing mystic scenario, a suggestive picture that you will always remember! Inside, there is a museum with the collection of ancient weapon, old watches, antique kitchenware, numerous paintings, a rich library and even an astronomic observatory. Beneath and around the hermitage you can spot the set of rocks with the inscriptions in Glagolitic, the ancient Croatian alphabet.
